Hurunui College in North Canterbury wanted to transform the area previously occupied by old prefab classrooms into a space that would be more than a standard playground. The school leadership was looking for a solution that would not only engage students in active play but also harmonise with the school’s natural, rural surroundings and serve the wider local community.
Creo Playspace delivered a customised playground based on natural robinia timber from the Robinia Play and Single collections. The design included an obstacle course, natural climbing elements, a climbing net tower, and student favourites – a basket swing and a Viking swing. The entire space was designed to encourage physical activity, creativity, and imaginative play.
Hurunui College gained a modern, engaging playground that supports students’ physical development and creative play, while also serving as a community hub for Hawarden. The playground has become a visual and functional extension of the school’s natural landscape.
