WHAT CHALLENGE DID THE CUSTOMER COME WITH?

The London Borough of Merton Council wanted to create an exciting, beach and sea-themed playground at Joseph Hood Recreation Ground, bringing the fun and adventure of the seaside to the heart of Merton. The new play space needed to complement the neighbouring paddling pool and water play facility, previously designed and installed by Active Landscapes, creating a cohesive recreational destination for the local community. Accessibility and inclusivity were also key priorities, ensuring that children of all ages and abilities could enjoy the space together.

WHAT DID WE DO IN THE PROJECT?

Active Landscapes designed and installed a vibrant coastal-themed playground inspired by the sights and experiences of the seaside. The play equipment includes a ship, lighthouse, climbing structures, slides, swings and interactive features. Colourful wetpour safety surfacing, with flowing shapes, vibrant blues, golden yellows and playful marine graphics, brings the sand, sea and shoreline to life.

Accessibility was central to the design, with a carefully selected range of inclusive equipment, including a Mirage Seat Swing, Basket Swing, large double wheelchair-accessible roundabout, multi-person seesaw and spinning twister dish, alongside wheelchair-accessible picnic tables. The varied play opportunities encourage imaginative role play, climbing, balancing, swinging, sliding and social interaction between children with different abilities.

WHAT DID THE CUSTOMER GAIN FROM THE PROJECT?

The London Borough of Merton Council gained a distinctive, inclusive play destination that works in harmony with the neighbouring paddling pool and water play facility. Together, the two spaces offer families a little taste of the coast without leaving their local community.

The playground provides a welcoming environment where children of different ages and abilities can play, explore and interact together. By combining imaginative design, colourful marine-inspired surfacing and a wide variety of play opportunities, the project has transformed Joseph Hood Recreation Ground into an attractive destination for adventure, discovery and family enjoyment.
