Calculating the carbon footprint of our products

At Buglo, we have started calculating the carbon footprint of our products. We want to understand the environmental impact of our playgrounds and the individual stages involved in their production and use. This helps us better understand where emissions are generated and identify areas where we can reduce them.

How do we calculate the carbon footprint?

We carry out our calculations in accordance with the international Product Life Cycle Accounting and Reporting Standard. We analyse the full life cycle of a product using a cradle-to-grave approach. This means taking into account each stage, from raw material extraction through production, transport and distribution, to use and end of life.
We also analyse the cradle-to-gate stage, which covers the journey of a product from raw material extraction to the point at which it leaves the manufacturing facility. This allows us to take a closer look at emissions generated during the design and production stages.

What has the greatest impact on the carbon footprint?

Our analyses show that materials and their initial processing account for a significant proportion of the carbon footprint of our playgrounds. Transport, distribution and storage also have a significant impact.
These are therefore key areas for us as we continue working to reduce our environmental impact. Understanding where emissions come from helps us make more informed decisions about, among other things, material selection, supply chain organisation and product design.

The first calculations are already complete

The carbon footprint has already been calculated for ten pieces of equipment from the Active range. For each product, we have taken its full life cycle into account.
Certificates for selected products are already available to download. Further products are currently being analysed.

What’s next?

We see carbon footprint calculation as an ongoing process that will remain an important part of our work in the coming years. Ultimately, we aim to calculate the carbon footprint of our entire product range, including both in-ground and flange-mounted installation options. We plan to make these available on our website so that certificates can be easily found and downloaded for individual products.
We want to systematically expand the scope of our analyses and put the data we collect into practice, including when designing new equipment, selecting materials, and optimising our processes and supply chain.

Important information about the calculations

The carbon footprint of selected products in our range has been calculated by an external organisation specialising in this type of analysis. The remaining calculations are carried out by Buglo in-house, using the same tool and methodology and maintaining consistency in the assumptions applied.
