The Kapiti Coast District Council in Paraparaumu wanted to transform the existing playground at Lorna Irene Reserve into a space fully accessible for all children. The former playground, with high edging, bark surfacing, and traditional equipment, created barriers for children with different needs, including a child using a wheelchair. The goal was to create a place that combined inclusivity with the joy of play, while engaging the wider local community.
Creo Playspace designed a fully accessible, inclusive playground. The project included sensory and interactive play elements that supported both physical and cognitive play. All equipment and surfacing were carefully selected to be safe, visually appealing, and wheelchair-friendly.
The Kapiti Coast District Council gained a modern, fully inclusive playground that brings the community together and enables every child to enjoy play, regardless of ability. Lorna Irene Reserve has become an iconic feature of the local public space, and the project was awarded the prestigious 2023 Playground of the Year by Recreation Aotearoa.
