WHAT CHALLENGE DID THE CUSTOMER COME WITH?

London Borough of Merton Council set out to deliver the first phase of a new play space at Lewis Road Recreation Ground. The challenge was to create a playground that would feel closely connected to its surroundings and reflect the unique character of the area, while offering children an engaging, safe and visually appealing place to play.

WHAT DID WE DO IN THE PROJECT?

Inspired by the natural landscape of nearby Mitcham Common – a 180-hectare site of metropolitan importance for nature conservation – Active Landscapes developed a themed play area supported by a safety surface referencing the local environment. The design draws on the character of woodland trails and biodiversity, translating natural forms and textures into a coherent, attractive play space that feels rooted in its location.

WHAT DID THE CUSTOMER GAIN FROM THE PROJECT?

London Borough of Merton Council gained a distinctive, place-specific playground that successfully combines play value with a strong sense of local identity. Lewis Road Recreation Ground now offers children a fun and engaging environment, while the wider community benefits from a thoughtfully designed public space that celebrates the natural heritage of Mitcham Common and enhances the overall quality of the area.
